NEW WATERFRONT OF CATANIA

Description

The project is aimed at the redevelopment of the Waterfront of Catania and at the creation of the Mediterranean Center for Contemporary Arts [Auditorium, BlackBox, theater, dance spaces, exhibition spaces] in the industrial area of ​​Italcementi. This area of Catania has always been characterized by a productive vocation, but today there are many abandoned buildings. The project explores new forms of production related to creativity and interacts with the size established by the landscape, the harbor, the Etna Mount, the cranes and the plot of the road infrastructures.
The existing Great industrial pavillon become the new door of the south entrance of the city. On the opposite side, there is the square of the great events that relates the new development to the district of S. Christopher. The square allow the acces to the exhibition hall, to the cinemas and to the tower that houses the activities for new technologies and digital media. The plaza that overlooks the sea is a suitable forum for
temporary events, ceremonies and presentations. The existing pavilion will accommodate temporary exhibitions, creative workshops and a school of scenography.

Descrizione

Il progetto è finalizzato alla riqualificazione del Waterfront di Catania e alla creazione del Centro Mediterraneo per le Arti Contemporanee [Auditorium, BlackBox, teatro, spazi di danza, spazi espositivi] nella zona industriale della Italcementi. Questa parte di Catania è sempre stata caratterizzata da una vocazione produttiva, ma oggi ci sono molti edifici abbandonati. Il progetto esplora nuove forme di produzione legate alla creatività e interagisce con le dimensioni stabilite dal paesaggio, dal porto, dall’Etna, dalle gru e dalla trama delle infrastrutture stradali.
L’attuale grande padiglione industriale diventa la nuova porta d’ingresso sud della città. Sul lato opposto, c’è la piazza dei grandi eventi che mette in relazione il nuovo sistema al quartiere di S. Cristoforo. La piazza consente l’accesso alla sala espositiva, ai cinema e alla torre che ospita le attività per le nuove tecnologie e media digitali. La piazza che si affaccia sul mare è un forum adatto per eventi temporanei, cerimonie e presentazioni. Il padiglione esistente ospiterà mostre temporanee, laboratori creativi e una scuola di scenografia.
